Strive to Thrive presents youth with life skills needed to successfully interact with others and overcome obstacles they may face. A focus is put on positive mindsets and behaviors that can be utilized by students in order to avoid negative pressures and influences they may come across.

Session Topics

Choices focuses on ensuring that students realize that they are constantly making choices in their daily lives. Youth will be taught that a growth mindset will lead to perseverance and resilience to convert life’s setbacks into future successes. Often times when faced with a situation we tend to REACT rather than RESPOND. Youth will be encouraged to begin “to take a step back before you react”, which will be reinforced through the entire 6 weeks. Discussions on peer pressure and other influences on our choices take place during this session. Students will learn to identify the differences between passive, aggressive and assertive behaviors. Discussions about the ways to become assertive in difficult situations will be introduced. Students learn that the choices they make will determine the life they live.

Self-Esteem focuses on the development of self-esteem. The lesson provides students with strategies to improve their self-image when necessary. It also teaches them to deal with negative peer pressure, bad influences, and bullying. It encourages students to set goals and anticipate risk factors so they can remain on a successful path towards those goals. Having goals and knowing our sparks help us to behave assertively and make good choices even during the times we are feeling low.

Teasing, Bullying, Harassment And Sexual Harassment provides students with a self-assessment regarding their behavior when interacting with their peers. It allows students to consider that behaviors they view and may engage in labels as friendly teasing or playing around can actually be bullying and have detrimental consequences for others. Youth will recognize that people will react differently to being bullied. This session examines the importance of having empathy and remaining assertive in the face of bullying. Youth will be taught to identify the difference between bullying and the different forms of harassment, including sexual harassment. It examines school and civil laws and regulations against bullying and harassment while demonstrating consequences and upstander responsibility.

Cyberbullying, Internet Safety And Responsibility is an extension of the previous lesson and it is delivered in a group discussion format to engage students. It teaches youth to be aware of the impact their words and actions have on others and how technology can negatively impact this behavior. It relates real life events and situations where media influences, the cyber/virtual worlds, peers and predators have endangered the lives of children. The students have the opportunity to learn from their peers and real life events regarding these issues. The use of media clips, news articles, and anecdotes help the Instructor bring the message to the students, that the risks are closer to home than they may be aware. It also demonstrates how easy it is for others to access personal information and use it in a harmful manner. This session also educates youth of the legal consequences of sexting. Identifies “sparks champions” or trusted adults that they can go for help.

Coping With Stress teaches that stress in an unavoidable factor in our lives which can result in many emotions and can become a factor in making poor choices; therefore leading towards negative and destructive behavior. It helps youth identify the dangers and challenges resulting from the use and abuse of legal and illegal substances; alcohol, tobacco and medications. It addresses: self analysis and identification of stressors, coping skills, the development of a plan of action, and goal setting.

Communication And Conflict Resolution Skills focuses on the importance of communicating effectively and developing successful conflict resolution skills. It stresses that conflict is a normal part of life, which people can respond to in different ways (passively, aggressively and assertively). When handled properly and through reflection, conflict can provide numerous benefits for everyone involved. This session also stressed the importance of practicing proper communication skills especially needed in this era of advanced technology.
